SHY FILMS – CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES

This document outlines current casting and crew opportunities across three SHY Films projects:

🎥 Short Film: The World She Painted

Lead Animator

We are seeking a visionary Lead Animator to bring to life a poignant and visually arresting short film, The World She Painted. This project explores the delicate boundary between a mother’s love and a harsh reality, requiring an animator who can balance vibrant, “painted” beauty with the gritty, somber atmosphere of a world transformed by conflict.

Project Overview

The World She Painted follows a blind little boy who relies on his mother’s nightly stories to understand the world. She describes their city as a place of vivid mountains, flowing rivers, and beautiful buildings. These stories are his only source of joy and comfort.

However, when a glowing angel grants the boy’s wish to see , he discovers the heartbreaking truth: the “festival” his mother described was the sound of war. The beautiful city is actually a ruin of murky rivers, collapsed buildings, and black smoke. The film culminates in a powerful choice: the boy asks to forget the devastation he has seen to preserve the beautiful images his mother gave him.

Key Responsibilities
  • Narrative Animation: Create fluid, emotive character animations, specifically focusing on the tender interactions between the boy and his mother.
  • Visual Contrasts: Execute the transition between two distinct visual styles: the “vividly painted” world of the mother’s stories and the “dark, ruined” reality of the war-torn city.
  • Ethereal Effects: Animate the appearance of the “glowing angel” and the magical moment the boy is granted sight.
  • Emotional Nuance: Capture the boy’s heartbreak upon seeing the ruins and his ultimate peace as he chooses to return to his mother’s “warmth”.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Proven Experience: A strong portfolio in 2D or stylized 3D animation with a focus on cinematic storytelling.
  • Atmospheric Storytelling: Ability to convey heavy themes—such as the impact of war—in a way that is accessible yet profound.

  • Character Depth: Skill in animating subtle facial expressions, particularly for the boy’s first time seeing his mother’s face.

  • Technical Proficiency: Mastery of industry-standard software (e.g., Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe After Effects, or Blender).

  • Technical Leadership: Oversee the camera and lighting departments, working in direct partnership with the Gaffer to achieve the desired mood.

  • Shot Composition: Design framing and camera movements that enhance the psychological tension of the contained institutional setting.

  • Equipment Management: Select appropriate lenses and camera packages suited for the production’s technical and creative needs.

  • Consistency: Ensure visual and continuity standards are maintained across a fast-paced 14-day shoot.

Compensation:

  • Profit-share / backend participation

CAST ROLES

Character Breakdown (Excluding Lead)

V

  • Role Type: Supporting (Major)

  • Gender / Age: Female, early 20s (23)

  • Appearance: Long hair, gritty/distressed aesthetic. Wears a long green jacket, ripped blue jeans, and a junkie hat. Initially appears to have no cybernetic alterations, but later reveals hidden technological wiring beneath her makeup.

  • Character Bio: Applies for a waitress position at Chef Jacobs’ restaurant, presenting herself as a clumsy, wide-eyed “old-world” culinary purist who despises the dominant gum culture. She is highly persuasive, seemingly innocent, and quickly becomes Jacobs’ confidante. However, V is actually a calculated undercover operational asset for Cyber-world Security working directly alongside E.

  • Actor Requirements: Strong range required. Must seamlessly transition from a clumsy, quirky comic-relief character to a cold, highly physical, cybernetic operative. Impeccable physical acting skills are a must.

TIM

  • Role Type: Supporting

  • Gender / Age: Male, 23 years old

  • Appearance: Classic worn-down service worker aesthetic. Wears a customer service VR headset (frequently adjusted incorrectly as his panic settles in).

  • Character Bio: The anxious, overworked, and highly stressed cashier/front-of-house worker at Neo Restaurant. He lives in fear of the shifting totalitarian state but is equally terrified of Chef Jacobs’ volatile temperament. As he consumes the serum-tainted food, he becomes a tragic early victim of the escalating green pandemic.

  • Actor Requirements: Excellent comedic timing mixed with heavy dramatic vulnerability. Will require physical performance work/SFX makeup application to depict severe illness and deterioration.

E

  • Role Type: Supporting / Antagonist

  • Gender / Age: Female, 40s (F40)

  • Appearance: Intimidating, strictly formal presentation. Long black coat, dark suit with a black tie, a black hat, and an official wire-shaped tree emblem pinned to her coat.

  • Character Bio: The ruthless Head of Cyber-world Security. Cold, calculating, and completely lacking in human emotion, she perpetually chews government-issued synthetic gums. She is investigating a corporate lab theft but views the resulting societal decay not as a tragedy, but as a highly efficient corporate cleansing mechanism.

  • Actor Requirements: Commanding screen presence. Mastery over deadpan, micro-expression acting. Speaks with absolute authority and bureaucratic chill.

EFFICIENCY AGENT
  • Role Type: Supporting / Featured

  • Gender / Age: Male, 40s (M40)

  • Appearance: Bureaucratically sharp corporate attire. Wears an invisible keyboard interface and a prominent Efficiency Government badge depicting a human climbing a mountain. Later appears disheveled, bloody, and visually corrupted by the plague.

  • Character Bio: A condescending government tax auditor sent to squeeze missing revenue out of the restaurant. Arrogant and smugly reliant on state technology, his professionalism crumbles the moment he accidentally samples Jacobs’ contaminated food, leading to a violent addiction and his ultimate demise.

PUNK

  • Role Type: Supporting / Featured

  • Gender / Age: Male, early-to-mid 30s (M33)

  • Appearance: Dystopian criminal/underground aesthetic. Long black jacket and a distinct metal face mask.

  • Character Bio: A dangerous black-market fence and local gang leader who trades stolen government tech and illegal drugs (“Red Dragon”). He acts as a predatory financial sponsor to Jacobs’ restaurant but is deeply protective of his missing gang members.

  • Actor Requirements: High-energy, menacing performance. Needs to handle simulated firearm usage.

Featured Ensemble & Background Roles
The “Artist” Squatters / Freaks
  • Silent Scream: A combative, physically aggressive street artist who refuses to pay for services, viewing the physical world as a lawless canvas. (Requires stage combat experience).

  • Unintelligent Bird: An eccentric, avant-garde dancer in a dusty, old black performance outfit who aggressively treats the dining area as her stage. (Requires contemporary/expressive dance background).

  • Tears of Agony: A melodramatic, performative artist who feeds off of human misery and fear.

The Neo Restaurant Customers / Crowd
  • Turkish Customer: A vocal, hot-headed local customer who gets into arguments regarding service times. (Must speak fluent Turkish).

  • Raving Cyberboys / Gang Members: High-energy background performers portraying a drug-fueled, VR-addicted dystopian youth culture. Will involve chaotic club/fight choreography.

  • VR Headset Line Customers: General background talent representing a brain-numbed populace glued to headsets, throwing away chewing gum, and eating aggressively.

Crew Requirements & Notice to Applicants

We are actively recruiting for key technical crew departments to join us in Dalston for this 2-week production block this October:

Technical HODs & Key Crew
  • Director of Photography (DoP): Looking for an operator capable of capturing the stark contrast between the warm, gritty, retro 1980s antique aesthetic of Neo Restaurant and the cold, sterile, high-tech reality of the “Cyber-world”. Experience with low-light, atmospheric, and high-intensity neon night environments is highly desirable.

  • Gaffer: Needed to manage complex interior lighting setups, moving between moody restaurant service hours and the chaotic, hyper-saturated rave sequences. Comfort with mixing soft retro tones and harsh, tech-inspired lighting is essential.

  • Sound Recordist: Must have independent feature experience capturing clean dialogue amid chaotic, crowded restaurant crowds, shouting, background brawls, and simulated overlapping club environments.

  • Script Supervisor: Critical role required to maintain strict continuity across a fast-paced, 2-week shooting window. The script features progressive, multi-stage physical/visual decay of the main sets and escalating character sickness tiers across tight internal timelines.

Creative & Special Departments
    • SFX Makeup Artists: Experienced in fabricating and applying prosthetic “cybernetic facial wiring”, as well as executing realistic depictions of the narrative’s “green virus” (vomit, eye socket discharge, and dynamic fluid work).

    • Stunt / Fight Coordinators: For safely managing restaurant brawls, physical arm breaks, and firearm standoffs in tight interior sets.

    • Props / Production Design: Specialists capable of blending 1980s retro-antique set pieces with futuristic, dystopian “invisible technology” props and unique synthetic food/sauce design.
